Car subscription checklist: The questions you need to ask

Are you considering a car subscription? We share an inside look at the questions to ask before you register, and how a subscription with Onto makes it easy to get into your next EV (electric vehicle).

Car subscriptions have become one of the most popular ways to start driving an electric car. If you’re looking for a flexible and cost-effective way to access the latest electric vehicles, a car subscription could be the ideal option for you.

In this article, we’ve put together the essential questions you’ll want to ask before you register for a car subscription - and shared how Onto makes getting into an electric car more convenient than ever.

Summary

  • Onto subscriptions renew monthly - keep your car as long as you like, or swap it for a different one at the end of the month.
  • A 750-mile allowance is included with each month’s subscription - and it’s easy to add more, directly from our Onto app or website.
  • Car subscription cuts the wait times - Onto has the latest electric cars, ready for delivery to your door.
  • Every Onto subscription is all-inclusive - insurance, maintenance, and even free public charging at partner outlets are all taken care of.
  • No more paperwork - your Onto car subscription begins with a simple, streamlined sign-up.

How long can I keep my car? When do I renew my car subscription?

Unlike a traditional lease, a car subscription has a monthly contract - and you won’t have to commit to one vehicle for three or four years.

Onto subscriptions renew on a monthly basis. You can keep your electric car for as long as you’d like, or you’re free to choose another one for next month. Stay up to date with all the latest models, or simply trade your saloon for a convertible for the summer - a subscription gives you the flexibility to choose the right electric car for your needs, even when those needs change.

Can I add extra miles to my monthly allowance?

When you agree to a car lease, you agree not to exceed a specified mileage allowance. Drivers will sometimes opt for low mileage limits in the hope of finding better deals on their leases, but this can often end up costing more in the long run. Dealers will charge strict penalty fees for excess miles, and there’s usually no way to add additional miles once your lease has been finalised.

With a car subscription from Onto, we provide a generous allowance of 750 miles every month. And if you need to add extra miles, it’s no problem - simply go to our app or website, and you’ll be able to add 250, 500, 750, or 1,000 additional miles.

If you don’t use all of your monthly miles, don’t worry - they’ll stay in your account and you can use them whenever you like during the following 12 months.

Which cars are available with a car subscription?

Traditional car leases can mean months of waiting for a car to be available. If you’ve looked at leasing an electric car recently, you’ve undoubtedly found that the models you want are on backorder - maybe until next year for popular models.

When you lease, it’s rarely as simple as choosing a car that’s on the sales floor and driving it away that day. After completing all of the paperwork and putting down your deposit, you’re usually just placing an order for the car you’d like to lease. It can take weeks for your car to arrive at the dealer, and recently, wait times have been even longer.

With Onto, you can see which electric cars are available now simply by searching your postcode. Choose from popular models like the Fiat 500 Electric, the Vauxhall Corsa-e, or the Audi e-tron - and have your  electric vehicle delivered to your home in as little as a few days.

What is included with my electric car subscription?

Before you decide on a car subscription, you’ll want to make sure that you have everything in place to start driving once your car arrives. In the past, leasing usually involved going through the process of finding your own insurance cover, and other car subscription services may have similar requirements.

Onto electric car subscriptions are all-inclusive. We’ve looked after everything you need to get on the road and keep driving safely. Insurance, maintenance, breakdown cover, and even free public charging options are all included as standard with every monthly subscription.

What information will I need to provide to register for a car subscription?

Signing up for an Onto car subscription is easy and purely digital. Unlike a lease, there’s no need to fill out stacks of paperwork or provide extensive personal information.

When you book your first electric car with Onto, you’ll need to provide a photo of your driving licence, a selfie of yourself holding your driving licence, and your payment information. That’s it.

Once we’ve made sure everything’s in order and you pass our eligibility criteria, we’ll be able to deliver your electric vehicle - and you’ll be able to start enjoying our all-inclusive car subscription experience.
